The Best Marketing Isn’t About Your Business. It’s About You.

A couple of weeks ago, I needed to make an appointment with someone I’d never worked with before. Like most people these days, I did what we all do—I Googled them. Their website looked great. Their reviews were solid. They clearly knew what they were doing. But before I picked up the phone, I clicked on their social media. I wanted to know who they were. Not in a creepy way. I didn’t need to know where they went on vacation or what they had for dinner last Tuesday. I just wanted to get a feel for the person behind the business. Were they approachable? Did they seem genuine? Would I actually enjoy working with them?

Within a few minutes, I had my answer. Not because of their logo, their list of services, their perfectly designed website..it was because I watched a short video where they were simply talking. They smiled. They laughed at themselves. They explained something in a way that made sense. By the end of the video, I felt like I already knew them.

That’s when I realized something. I wasn’t choosing a business. I was choosing a person. The funny thing is, we all do this. We just don’t always realize we’re doing it.

Think about the businesses you recommend without hesitation. Maybe it’s your hairstylist, your financial advisor, your favorite realtor, or the mechanic you’ve trusted for years. Chances are, you don’t start by talking about their credentials. You start by talking about them.

“Oh, you’ll love her. She’s so easy to talk to.”

“He’s just honest. If you don’t need something fixed, he’ll tell you.”

“She explains everything in a way that actually makes sense.”

We’re describing people, not businesses. And yet, somewhere along the way, we’ve convinced ourselves that marketing should hide the person behind the company. We polish everything until it sounds professional. We remove our personality because we think that’s what businesses are supposed to do. We spend hours trying to sound like an expert when the people reading our content are just trying to figure out if they can trust us.

I see this all the time with clients.

They’ll tell me they’re not sure what to say in a video because they don’t think they’re interesting enough. Then we start talking, and for the next thirty minutes they tell me stories about customers they’ve helped, lessons they’ve learned, or funny things that happened during the week. Half the time I interrupt them.

“I hope you know that’s your next video.”

They usually laugh. “No, that’s just me talking.”

Exactly. That’s why it works.

One of my favorite parts of working one-on-one with business owners is helping them realize they don’t have to invent a personality for social media. They already have one. It’s the same personality their clients enjoy sitting across the table from. It’s the same personality that gets referrals. It’s the same personality that built their business in the first place.

For some reason, the minute a camera comes out, they think they’re supposed to become someone else. I don’t know who started that rumor, but I’d like to have a conversation with them.

The businesses that stick with me aren’t necessarily the loudest or the flashiest. They’re the ones that feel familiar. They’re the businesses where I know who’s behind the logo. I know how they think, what they care about, what they’re like on a Tuesday morning when things don’t go according to plan.

That’s what builds trust. Video is just one of the ways we let people see that.

People often ask me why I’m so passionate about video, and honestly, it has very little to do with cameras or editing software. I love video because it shortens the distance between people. A blog can tell me what you know. A video lets me see who you are. That’s a pretty powerful difference, especially now.

We live in a world where AI can write captions, generate images, summarize meetings, and even create talking avatars. Those tools are impressive, and I use many of them myself. But none of them can replace the moment when someone hears your laugh, sees the way your eyes light up when you talk about your business, or notices the excitement in your voice when you’re explaining something you genuinely love. Those little moments are impossible to manufacture. And they’re often the reason someone decides to work with you instead of the business down the street.

So if you’ve been wondering whether people really want to hear from you…they do. The best marketing is not about your business. It’s about YOU.

Not because you’re the funniest person on the internet.
Not because every story is groundbreaking.
And certainly not because you’re trying to become an influencer.

They want to know who’s behind the business they’re trusting with their money, their time, and sometimes their biggest decisions.

That’s all.

Turns out, that’s more than enough.

One Last Thing…

The best compliment I can ever give one of my clients isn’t, “That was a great marketing video.”

It’s this:

“That sounded exactly like you.”

Because when your marketing sounds like you, it stops feeling like marketing. It starts feeling like a conversation. And conversations have a funny way of turning into relationships. Relationships turn into trust.

And trust?

That’s still the best marketing strategy I’ve ever seen.
